Porsche Boxster S
The Porsche Boxster has always had a bit of an image crisis. Jeremy Clarkson once said that the biggest problem with the Boxster is that if you buy one you are letting people know that your life hasn’t gone as well as you had hoped (I’m sure I didn’t get the quote exactly right, but that was the basic idea). This has led many to think of the Boxster as a lesser car, but did all that change with the new model.
The new Porsche Boxster S comes very close in performance to the base 911 Carrera. The styling is now much more aggressive and more masculine than in previous models. And the car is possibly the best roadster that you can buy.
We’ve had the chance to drive a 981 Boxster S and a 991 Carrera S back to back and the mid-engined sports car holds its own. If money was no object I would still go for the Carrera S for its better performance, but if you are talking the base 911 that makes it a much harder decision. The mid-engined car has much more neutral handling and has plenty of performance.
This video takes a look at the roadster and reviews the car. In the video the idea that the rear-engined big brother may not be the best sports car that Porsche currently makes is thrown out. While we aren’t quite there yet, we do think that the Boxster and especially the Cayman have come very close to the 911. In fact they are so close that it is a tough decision which of these sports cars to buy. We would still stick with the classic rear-engined car (although not buy a huge margin), but you can’t go wrong with any of them.
