We’ve already seen images of the Porsche Cayman GT4 being tested and the rumormill has had plenty of speculation of what a high performance Cayman would be like. Well now we know as Porsche has unveiled the GT3.

The styling has elements of the GT3 and it looks more purposeful than the standard car. Power is up and the car is very track ready. Just how track ready is it? Well, the GT4 has managed a Nurburgring lap time of just 7 minutes and 40 seconds. That very good time is the same as the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3.

Exterior

The styling is very purposeful. It combines a front facia similar to the GT3 and the side air-intakes are more pronounced. The large rear spoiler not only provides plenty of downforce, but it also gives it a high performance look.

It still retains the the lines of the 981, but with touches, such as the GT3 inspired hood air-outlet and blackened headlights, it looks more special. If that isn’t enough it has GT4 badging on the side and rear to help separate it from the standard Cayman.

Interior

The interior rivals that of the 911 GT3. There is plenty of leather and Alcantara to give it a special feel. It makes the sports car feel like it should cost much more money.

The door handles are replaced by leather straps which harken back to Porsche’s racing heritage. The supportive sport seats hold you in tightly with their nice bolsters and they wear the GT4 script on the headrest.

Drivetrain

The Cayman GT4 is powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six taken from the 911 Carrera S. Power is not far off of the 911 as it outputs a very strong 385 horsepower. That is just 15 horsepower off of the Carrera S and the GT4 is a lighter car putting performance in a straight line very close.

The boxer engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission for a more pure driving experience than the 991 GT3. The 0-60 mph time is just 4.2 seconds which is a tenth of a second faster than a 911 Carrera S with the manual transmission.

Flat out the Cayman GT4 can hit a top speed of 183 mph. The suspension and brakes are made almost entirely of parts from the GT3, making it perfect for the track.

Pricing

The Porsche Cayman GT4 starts at $84,600 and will hit dealerships in July.

The Cayman GT4 is the car that many enthusiasts have been waiting for since the mid-engined sports car made its debut. With its GT3 components, high performance looks and high quality interior it will be a great track toy or daily driver. Add the inherent balance and you have a car that many will find more desirable than all but the higher performance 911s.

It appears that Porsche is now very serious about the Cayman. Now to see if the Boxster gets the same treatment as is rumored.
