200th Audi R8 LMS
The 200th Audi R8 LMS has been produced. The German performance and luxury car maker has produced quite a successful competition machine and it has also helped improve the road legal R8 as the chassis of the production and race car share the same manufacturing lines.
The R8 LMS has had two generations so far with 136 models being from the first generation and 64 models from the second generation. The second gen. car was launched in 2015, so expect that number to keep climbing.
“We’re proud of this mark of 200 cars,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of quattro. “With more than ten manufacturers offering their products, including many premium sports car brands, the GT3 market is fiercely competitive in many countries. The demand shows that both our product and our services are focused on the customer and absolutely competitive.”
Since the R8 LMS made its debut the race car has managed 28 overall championships and 34 class titles. It has also managed nine overall victories in 24 hour endurance races plus another four titles in 12 hour races.
Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing, said: “When our new model was launched last year, many teams opted for the Audi R8 LMS – and inquiries from many parts of the world continue to be received in large numbers. Our teams and drivers have been battling for victories and championship titles around the globe ever since the new race car’s first full season.”
