Mazda MX-5 RF Launch Edition
Mazda pulled the covers off of the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Launch Edition concept at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Today they have announced that the concept will go into limited production with just 1,000 units being sold in the US.
The initial group of eligible purchasers will only be from a select group of loyal buyers that will be contacted by Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). These potential buyers get a non-disclosed, to the public, window of time to place their orders before the remaining inventory may be sold to additional buyers. It is likely that none of these will make it past the first round and all will be sold out very quickly.
The MX-5 RF Launch Edition concept was a huge hit at NYIAS. The limited edition model is more that just the Machine Gray Metallic paint color and the Auburn Nappa leather interior trim. It gets a hard top with a removable panel similar to the Porsche 911 Targa of the ’60s. All of the 1000 examples will be almost exactly the same, with buyers only being able to choose between an automatic or manual transmission.
“MX-5 has enjoyed 27 years of being the world’s best-selling roadster, being named 2016 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year and receiving hundreds, if not thousands, of other accolades,” said Robert Davis, senior VP, U.S. Operations, MNAO. “Rarely does any automaker have a vehicle that garners the sort of loyalty and enthusiasm MX-5 generates—something we don’t take lightly. MX-5 RF is the next chapter of this storied model line, and we can’t think of a better way to give back than to first offer this bespoke Launch Edition to those who have stuck with us, believing in our mission to deliver the best-driving vehicles on the road.”
