Richard Hammond In A Porsche 918 Spyder

Richard Hammond In A Porsche 918 Spyder

Before I begin, if you have not watched the first episode of The Grand Tour (or as I find myself calling it, the true New Top Gear) then what are you waiting for? Watch it now, I mean drop whatever you are doing and get on Amazon Prime to watch it (if you don’t already have Prime, it is worth it, just for The Grand Tour).

Just in case you are still here and haven’t watched it yet, I’ll give you the count of three to stop reading this and watch it before I start with the spoilers…

You may remember that before Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear that each of the presenters had tested one of the three 880+ horsepower hybrid supercars. Jeremy Clarkson experienced the McLaren P1, Richard Hammond drove a Porsche 918 Spyder and James May piloted the Ferrari LaFerrari.

In case you don’t remember these episodes of Top Gear (or want to watch the clips again) we have put each segment below. No matter if you watch the videos or not, make sure to keep scrolling for the rest of the article.

After these three scenes were aired a test between all three was promised to take place. There was even a bet that Jeremy Clarkson would change his first name to Jennifer if the P1 wasn’t the fastest. That didn’t happen with Clarkson, Hammond and May on Top Gear, but we did finally get to see the comparison on The Grand Tour.

Since you continued to read we assume that you already know that the Porsche 918 Spyder was the fastest around the track. The part we found interesting is that on paper it was the least likely to win. All three cars ran on the same tires, which may have helped the Porsche get a slight advantage. This goes to show how much of a difference the right tires can make.

Beyond the tires, the 918 Spyder often seems to hit above its level (although it is no slouch itself). It may not have as much power as the others, but with its four wheel steering and precision engineering, it can beat just about any road car on most tracks.

While Mr. Clarkson didn’t keep the original Top Gear bet, he did make a new bet. Because the 918 Spyder beat out the P1, Richard Hammond and James May will get to demolish his house (our understanding is he was already planning to build a new home, so it was a smart bet). That will be an episode to look forward to watching.
