The Lotus Exige is an ultra lightweight sports car. Unlike other automakers that offer as many features as they can, Lotus asks how little can we put into a car. For those looking on the used market, the result is a car that weighs in at just 2,089 lbs (depending on the year).
That means the small performance machine weighs about the same as a postage stamp. With the Exige in S 260 Sport form, you get a car with 257 horsepower. That makes for a vehicle with a really good power to weight ratio, but how does it compare to other high performance machines.
With the Lotus Exige S 260 Sport each horsepower only needs to push 8.128 lbs. compare that to the Ford Mustang GT of the same era which pushes 8.333 lbs per horsepower. While very good, when compared to a Lamborghini Murcielago, it does need each horse to push about 2.3 more lbs as the Lamborghini needs each horsepower need to push 5.807 lbs. So, the Lotus is fast, but not 2010 supercar fast.
However, is it possible that on a more technical track the Lotus Exige might do better? Say the Top Gear test track (which unfortunately will soon be no more)? The best way to find out is to watch the Stig behind the wheel and see if it might beat the time of a Lamborghini.
With values of a good used Lotus Exige starting at $40,000 and the top range going to about $70,000, that is a lot of car for the money.
