A new Ferrari 488 GTB starts at $252,800. That is way out of reach for most of us, but perhaps a used Ferrari is more affordable? The 458 that the 488 replaces will cost you about $160,000 for a car with about 30,000 miles on it (which is a little high for a Ferrari). But that is still a bit high for many of us.
A decent 360 the was two models before the 458 will run about $100,000 depending on a mileage and condition, but you can find them for as low as $60,000 for higher mileage examples. Not bad, but if you are in the $100,000 range all of the sudden the newer F430 (the F430 replaced the 360) is within reach.
The Ferrari F430 is a modern Ferrari and you can currently find decent cars with about 10,000 miles on it for about $110,000. That’s still a good amount of money, but reasonable for a Ferrari. However, there may still be some depreciation before it bottoms out. If you keep an eye on the market within the next 5-10 years prices for slightly higher mileage examples could go down to about the $50,000 -$70,000 range.
For those looking for a good F430 you expect maintenance prices to be higher than most less exclusive sports cars. Oil changes will run you about $500 or so depending on where you get it done. Having a shop replace spark plugs will cost you about $3,000 and belt replacements (needs to be done every 15,000 miles) run about $4,000. These prices are high, but when you compare them to maintenance costs for some older Ferrari’s (like the F355 and 308) they are more reasonable.
You can also save money and do some of these maintenance items yourself, but remember that this could hurt the resale value a bit as some potential buyers prefer to see a history of service from a dealer or a shop that specializes in Ferraris. Remember with any car that if you don’t have the money for the maintenance costs then it may not be the right car for you.
So, start saving your money now. I mean who needs a house or a retirement fund? You can always live in your Ferrari. Now can you get a 30 year mortgage on a car?
If you keep from going to Starbucks for the next few years and invest that money wisely, you’ll soon save the roughly $70,000 that it should cost with a bit more depreciation. Do this and a Ferrari F430 can be in your garage. Ideally you’ll have enough extra for a used Porsche as well, so you still have a performance machine to drive when you don’t want the added attention you get with a Ferrari (you’ll still get attention with a Porsche, but not so much that it is hard to live with on a daily basis).
