Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO

Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO

Porsche currently owns both the production car lap record of the Nürburgring, with the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and the overall record, with the Porsche 956. Back in 1983 an overall record of 6:11:13 was set by Stefan Bellof driving the 956.

Porsche is currently taking the 919 Hybrid on a world tour after retiring from its third straight 24 Hours of Le Mans overall victory. The Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO is extremely fast. Just how fast is it? The prototype has managed a quicker time than a Formula 1 car around Spa.

Let that sink in for a second. Now consider that the lap time that was beat was set by F1 star, Lewis Hamilton.

To put this into perspective take a look at the below video. It shows just how much faster an F1 car is than a V8 sports car and a V8 powered racing machine.

Now that you have seen how fast an F1 car is compared to other fast cars, watch the below side by side video of the 919 Hybrid EVO and the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 car lapping Spa.

Now that we see how fast the 919 prototype is, the Nürburgring overall lap record looks destined to fall. Not only that but some have estimated that the lap could even be under 5 minutes. We are not sure if that will happen, but with the right driver and track conditions, a time around 5 minutes seems quite possible.

About a week ago Porsche took the 919 Hybrid EVO to the Nürburgring. The car was pretty quick and managed a 6:20 lap time, but the conditions were far from ideal to try a record breaking run. It is believed that the 919 was taken to the legendary track to help prepare for an attempt at the record later this year.

Even though the Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO didn’t set a new lap record, it was only about 10 seconds off the record pace. That’s with the race car not being pushed and the driver lifting before the finish line. Check out the below video that shows footage of the attempts and explains why the 919 Hybrid EVO might be able to lap the Nürburgring in just 5 minutes.

After watching the video scroll down to the comments and let us know if the Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO will beat the lap record and if so, what you think the lap time will be.
