Porsche 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS

When Porsche first released the Porsche Boxster as a 1997 model year vehicle, it had a wonderful flat-six sitting in the middle. In the 2005 model year, the Cayman joined the lineup and once again a flat-six was sitting in the middle.

All was well until the 718 Boxster and Cayman models where released with a turbocharged flat-four engine. While when pushed the new power plant outperformed the outgoing six cylinder, the characteristic flat-six whale was missed by most enthusiasts.

The only option for a mid-engined naturally aspirated flat-six in a 718 has been the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder. While great cars, the premium over the base and S model is out of reach for many.

For those that can’t quite afford a GT4 or Spyder, Porsche will now offer another model trims featuring a flat-six.

The new 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS and 718 Boxster GTS will feature a 4.0-liter flat-six power plant. This is huge news as the previous 718 GTS models used a turbocharged flat-four.

The 4.0-liter power plant pumps out a healthy 394 horsepower. That isn’t that far off of the 414 horses offered in the GT4 and Spyder models.

This news is very welcome as Porsche sales of the 718 Boxster and Cayman have been down. While there are many factors to this, the change in engine has certainly been one.

The 2020 718 GTS models will be driver focused as a six-speed manual is the only transmission option.

While pricing hasn’t been released it is said to be under $90,000. While still costing a lot, when you consider what you get, that’s a lot of car for the money.

Of course the big question is if Porsche is going to stop there. Will the base and S models eventually get a flat-six again? Only time will tell, but a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-six would be a nice way to keep them more fuel efficient, while giving Porsche enthusiasts some of the characteristics they crave.

    All manufacturers seem to follow the same process of increasing the size, weight and cost of any model over time. Personally, I think Porsche should have a no frills, SMALL, light, driver’s car (like the 356/550/718 of old) w/ manual and auto transmission options. Think Lotus Elise but from Porsche. No power steering req’d; hard and soft/targa-top options, etc. would be nice, but base models w/out power seats, etc. that weigh the car down and enthusiasts don’t need. Throw it all back to an analog experience but w/ smart, modern digital h/w where it makes sense. Either the 2.9 Direct Injection NA six or a 2.0-2.5 turbo as the “base” engine seem reasonable. The car needs at least 100 HP/liter for marketing and economy purposes but the key is to make it LIGHT, so that it’s agile and handles well out of the box. As an aside, I love my non-pwr or heated seat 987.2 Boxster S w/ ~ 350 chipped and sport exhaust HP and a 6-spd. In silver and black, I feel like Jo Bonnier every time I start it up.

      Not a bad idea. I’m a huge fan of Lotus myself, even though I’m a Porsche guy. It would turn out to be something very special.

      Also, sounds like you have a great car, enjoy it.
