The Porsche 996 went through a period of time that is not uncommon of the 911. The Porsche 911 SC and 964 both went through the same period of being seen as a lesser generation of the legendary rear-engined sports car.
Of course times have changed and if prices are an indication, the 911 SC and 964 generations of the Porsche 911 are now considered prized possessions by all. For the 996 the market is showing that it’s time has come.
When the 996 first debuted it was the new cool car. It stared in movies, such as Gone in Sixty Seconds and was wanted by most sports car enthusiasts (other than air-cooled purists).
After the 997 generation that followed was released the love for the 996 started to fade resulting in plenty of depreciation. This eventually led to the label of the 996 being the least loved 911.
There are a number of reasons why the 996 is considered cool again and in the below video I try to explain the gain in its current favor.
