How Calexit Could Affect The Automotive Industry

Roughly half the people that voted in this past U.S. election voted against Donald Trump. As you know now President Trump won the Electoral College, but lost the popular vote. This outcome has not sat well with some and many well known actors had already threatened to move to Canada if Mr. Trump won the election.

Many of these folks live in California and most have not as of yet moved to our neighbor to the north. The fact that people are having to move has raised a different possibility. One that involves the Golden State no longer being part of the Union. The petition for succession is being called Calexit (taking a similar name as the successful Brexit). There are seemingly impossible odds for California to leave the United States, but what if it worked?

Fiat has announced pricing for their new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider. The much anticipated roadster will feature a 160 horsepower 184 lb-ft of torque engine in the standard car. 165 horsepower is available for those that go with the Abarth. The engine is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four cylinder unit, so expect for the after market to offer even more power options.

The 124 Spider is based on the Mazda MX-5, so you know that it should handle well. To say that the automotive press is looking forward to getting their hands on this Fiat is an understatement. When we interviewed MotorWeek’s John Davis at the LA Auto Show the Spider was the car at the show he was most excited about and the new Ford GT was among the machines at the show.

If you just won $50 million in the lottery and your first thought was I’m going to buy a McLaren P1 then you are too late to get a new one. Production of the last P1 has just finished, so anybody wanting to own the hybrid supercar will have to find one on the second hand market.

Production of the P1 road car was limited to just 375. For those looking to purchase one used, don’t expect for the value to go down, instead you are likely to pay more than the cost of a new P1 thanks to demand. This is the type of ultra high performance machine that doesn’t get hit with depreciation as other cars do.
