Ford Focus RS Ready for Rallycross

Ford has made it official, the Ford Focus RS will be competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship for the 2016 season. Two factory backed cars will start competing in the series staring on April 15th in Portugal.

The vehicles will be piloted by Ken Block and Andreas Bakkerud. The build of the racing version of the Focus RS was a joint effort between Ford Performance, Hoonigan Racing and M-Sport out of the U.K. The RS street car is pretty impressive, but the race car takes this to an entirely new level.

Fans of Red Bull Global Rallycross (GRC) will be very happy to hear that NBC will continue to air live races in 2016. This is the second consecutive year that the NBC family of networks will air events from the racing series.

For motorsports fans of the GRC Supercar races, all but one event will air on NBC’s flagship network (the other will be available on the NBC Sports Network). This means great live rally cross action will be available to both those with cable and those without. If you prefer to watch GRC Lite races then NBC Sports Network is a must have as it will cover races for that series.

The past few years Volkswagen has owned the Money Carlo Rally. This is the third year in a row that the German automaker has managed a victory in the opening round of the World Rally Championship (WRC). This year they went a step beyond getting the win, they also managed a one-two finish.

Not all was great for VW teams, however. The number 3 car of Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila finished the race early because of an accident that put the car into a ditch. In the incident a spectator was hit (thank the Lord he was not seriously hurt and it only made slight contact) which resulted in a fine as the team did not stop at the scene of the accident. This also caused them to arrive at the checkpoint late which ended their rally early. It is very unfortunate that the accident happened, but that is motorsport.

An undefeated season is a very rare thing in all sports, but in motorsport it may be even more difficult. Why is this? Simply because there are more variables to go wrong.

Mechanical failures or a crash can quickly sideline a car and that doesn’t even take into account the driver’s responsibility to drive well. Yes, winning every race for an entire series season for a single driver can be almost impossible. However, David Higgins has done just that driving for Subaru Rally Team USA in the Rally America National Championship.

This past weekend the seventh round of the FIA World Rally Championship was one of the most entertaining rally races of the last few years. It all ended quite well for Volkswagen as they managed a first and second place finish. Ford also had a decent round managing the final spot on the podium.

The Rally Poland was the twelfth one-two finish for the very capable VW Polo R WRC. Beyond this it was the 28th win in 33 starts for the very successful rally machine.
