Every time I see a Porsche 911SC, I start to drool. I probably need to buy one soon because it seems prices keep going up.

I used to be under the air-cooled spell; owned a '70 T Targa, 73 914 2.0, 72 E/RS+, and 86 3.2; and I sweated profusely in all, had to put up with little to no defrost, and except for the '72 and '86, relatively anemic performance. I say that b/c now I'm the proud owner of a '10 987.2 Boxster S and couldn't be happier. It took a while--years of watching cars like this sell for prices that keep going up. I'm a one car guy, so whatever I have ends up being an everything driver in what is one of the most humid climates in the free world. For years, I thought about turning my 3.2 coupe into a 3.4 twin-plug ST-clone restomod and retaining the R134a A/C. I paid $13k for the car some years ago, and would have easily spent another $50-$60k on the 3.4 rebuild and ST bodywork and interior. Virtually impossible for me.
That said, with its RSK/W-RS inspired styling and open air motoring, good power-to-weight ratio, and real a/c and heat the Boxster S offers, I neither miss any of those cars nor regret my decision to go water-cooled. My budget last year was $30k +/- and, it took 6 mos, but eventually found a 28k mile 987.2 Boxster S (Milltek exhaust, DFI and no IMS) for $31k. In its silver livery and with the top down, I've never felt closer to Jo Bonnier in his Targa Florio-winning RSK. For another $2-3k in planned ECU, plenum & TB mods, I'll have 350+ hp in a sub-3000 lb car and a weight/HP ratio 20% lower than my 2.7RS+ (estimated 220 hp from 9.2:1 compr and MFI). For those seeking OEM air-cooled cars, SC's like this are perhaps the smartest value. But for bat-out-of hell, drive-it-every-day rain or shine driving experience, don't overlook the water cooled cars.
The key is to know what you really want and then get to work finding it. Cheers,

Enjoy the Boxster. I guess the best answer is buy a Porsche Boxster S for daily driving and a 911 SC for the weekends. Now to make a bunch more cash to finance my taste in cars.

The 911 SC is cool, but for the price, I would look at a 997. But then I like the performance of newer cars.
