The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is an open-aired version of the lightweight Italian sports car. The 4C in many ways is similar to the Lotus Elise. It is a mid-engined sports car the doesn’t lug around more than is needed.
The car may not be the most powerful machine, but thanks to its lower weight it manages very good performance. It is also a more affordable Italian sports car than a car from Ferrari, Lamborghini or Pagani.
Both the Porsche Cayman and Alfa Romeo 4C are very good sports cars. The 4C is a very light-weight car where the Cayman is quite a bit more powerful.
The Porsche offers 275 horsepower in standard form and 325 horsepower in the S model. The Alfa Romeo offers only 237 horsepower, but it only weight 2,465 pounds. The Cayman weighs in at 2,900 pounds, so the 4C is 435 pounds lighter.
From 0-60 mph the Cayman can manage it in 5.1 seconds in the standard car and 4.4 in the Cayman S. The Alfa is faster from 0-60 mph at just 4.1 seconds. Although, on a track they would both be very close.
From a driving stand point the Alfa Romeo 4C is much more basic. In many ways it is similar to what you would get in a Lotus Exige. The Porsche Cayman is a very pleasant place to be. It is sporty, but with plenty of luxury and is more comfortable for daily driving.
From a price stand point they both start within $1,000 of each other. Of course the Cayman S commands a premium for the extra power.
So, what would you choose, the Italian Alfa Romeo 4C or the German Porsche Cayman?
We are coming to the time of the year when cars start to receive a number of awards and accolades. The Alfa Romeo 4C is one car that we expect to see mentioned any many of these awards lists.
The light-weight Italian sports car may only have 237 horsepower on tap, but because it weighs about as much as a postage stamp it has a great power-to-weight ratio. This allows the small car to launch from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.
The folks over at Motor Authority have taken notice and have named the Alfa Rome 4C their “Best Performance Luxury Car to Buy”. The car which starts at a price of $68,400 has a similar mentality to the Lotus philosophy.
At its price it is set to compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayman, so to win over cars like that is quite an honor. We think that the 4C will receive a few more accolades during this season, but what do you think?
