The Porsche 987 Cayman S is a great performance car. As modern 911s have gotten larger and more luxurious, the Cayman is closer to the formula of the classic 911. Of course the Cayman S offers this experience in a better handling modern package.

On paper what isn’t to like about the 3.4-liter flat-six powered lightweight sports car with 295 horses on tap. It offers plenty of performance in a rev happy car that is like using a scalpel when it comes to carving corners.

When Porsche first released the Porsche Boxster as a 1997 model year vehicle, it had a wonderful flat-six sitting in the middle. In the 2005 model year, the Cayman joined the lineup and once again a flat-six was sitting in the middle.

All was well until the 718 Boxster and Cayman models where released with a turbocharged flat-four engine. While when pushed the new power plant outperformed the outgoing six cylinder, the characteristic flat-six whale was missed by most enthusiasts.

The only option for a mid-engined naturally aspirated flat-six in a 718 has been the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder. While great cars, the premium over the base and S model is out of reach for many.

For those that can’t quite afford a GT4 or Spyder, Porsche will now offer another model trims featuring a flat-six.

Three years ago Porsche released the Cayman GT4 Clubsport. The stripped down track ready version of the Cayman GT4 was perfect for club racing.

Now the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport takes this to the next level. The mid-engined sports car features a 3.8-liter flat-six sitting behind the driver and in front of the rear axle. With 425 horsepower, a 40 horsepower increase over the previous GT4 Clubsport, pushing just 2,904 lbs., the Clubsport is pretty fast.
