The Mercedes-Benz Design Concept
This past weekend was the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The yearly event is a chance to see some increasingly cars. There are so many stunning vehicles around the Monterey area during the week that Ferraris become almost as common as Toyotas.
One of the highlights of the event is the Concept Lawn. This is where automakers show concepts or their latest production cars. The majority of the automobiles in this section are supercars, so we personally really enjoy seeing what high performance machines will be hitting the street (or track) very soon.
8. Hennessey Venom GT
The Hennessey Venom GT is one of the few cars that can compete with the Bugatti Veyron. For a short time it held the world record for the fastest production car in the world and it still is fast enough to travel back in time.
7. Lamborghini Aventador
Lamborghini had their 12 cylinder Aventador supercar on display. The car looked stunning, but got a little lost among some of the more extreme hybrids and race only cars.
6. Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo
The Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo made its debut on Friday, but it was also on display on the Sunday of the Concours. The non-street legal racing machine is made to compete in the single make Super Trofeo series and will be purchased by private racing teams. This is as extreme as you can get in the car that replaced the Gallardo.
5. Bentley Continental GT3
The racing theme continued with Bentley as they showed off their Continental GT3. The competition car looses the luxury that you expect in a Bentley and gets a stripped interior and safety equipment. It also has very aggressive styling that will strike fear in other racers.
4. Porsche 918 Spyder
887 horsepower and a Nurburgring lap time of just 6:57 (the record for a production car) is just about all a sales person has to say when talking about the Porsche 918 Spyder. We had seen the prototype before, but the finished product looks just a bit more polished and refined. With a very limited production this is sure to be a car that top Porsche collectors will want in their collection.
3. McLaren P1 GTR
The actual global debut of the McLaren P1 GTR was at an invite only event, however on the Concours Sunday the car was moved from the private McLaren tent and shown on the concourse lawn. The P1 GTR will be a very exclusive racing car as it is only available for sale to those that purchased one of the 375 P1 road cars.
2. Renovo Daytona Coupe
We loved the Renovo Daytona Coupe. At first it looked like just a very nice replica of the car that Shelby made in the ’60s, but it is actually a 500 horsepower all-electric vehicle. The car starts at over $500,000, so it commands a premium well over a Tesla Model S.
1. Mercedes-Benz Vision Gran Turismo Concept Car
By far the most popular car on the concept lawn was the Mercedes-Benz Vision Gran Turismo Concept. The car looks like a modern take on a 1930’s car and we think that Marvel should contact Mercedes to get this into one of their superhero movies (we can see Tony Stark behind the wheel now). The car is available to drive in Gran Turismo 6, but with its looks everyone at the show wanted the car to be a production car.
