Patrick Dempsey may be best know as a Hollywood star, but he has become quite good behind the wheel of a race car. The actor is making a return visit to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and is hoping for good results.
Last year his team put on a good showing, finishing fourth in their class, while leading for a large portion of the race. This time around Mr. Dempsey is aiming for more. He would like a podium finish and of course his team will be gunning for a class victory.
In this video he talks about his passion for racing and how he is ready for the famed 24 hour race. It also has plenty of good footage of Porsche 911 racing machines, which is never a bad thing.
So, Patrick Dempsey is ready for Le Mans, but are you? Let us know how you are preparing to watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the comments.
The 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans is almost here and Porsche is ready for the legendary endurance race. While much of the news from the German performance car maker has been about 2014, there is a lot to be excited about in 2013. Sure, 2014 will see them compete for the top prize, but this year it will be all about trying to win in the GT class.
To accomplish this they have an all-star cast of drivers. This year Team Dempsey Del Piero-Proton joins the racing family and they have two big names behind the wheel.
First you have former Porsche Works driver and a superstar of endurance racing, Patrick Long. That alone should be reason to watch, but this year you may be able to get your significant other to watch as well (that is of course if they don’t normally watch racing). All you have to do is tell them that Patrick Dempsey will be driving in the race and the TV will be on the race for the full 24 hours of coverage.
If all that isn’t enough to get you excited, Porsche has released a teaser video of what we have in store for the great race. The footage shows the teams that will be competing this year for them and will be enough to make any racing fan ready for the weekend to get here.
Live coverage of the race will be broadcast on SPEED, so get ready for a weekend of very little sleep to keep watching all the action. Of course if you can’t watch it all keep tuned to this blog as we will be following the action all weekend.
Patrick Dempsey is about as close as you can get to a modern day “King of Cool”. Much like Steve McQueen, the original “King of Cool”, Dempsey is a Hollywood Star and is also very much into sports car racing. He has spent a while driving Mazdas and now he is going to be driving the more competitive Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.
This video welcomes Patrick to the Porsche racing family. It talks about the passion that the German performance car maker has for motorsport and how they welcome the celebrity to their racing team.
The highlights in the video are from the American Le Mans Series race at Long Beach. Beyond this the footage was released to get people ready for Mr. Dempsey’s Porsche 24 Hours of Le Mans debut. With all the excitement over 2014, this helps remind us that a lot of excitement will still be had in 2013.
At the end of this month is the 51st running of the 24 Hour race at Daytona (a.k.a. the Rolex 24 at Daytona) and one of the drivers will be Patrick Dempsey. The actor best known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy has become a good racing driver. While he has not yet become a top tier driver he is a very good driver and looks to be improving with each race.
Steve McQueen was nicknamed “The King of Cool”, thanks to his movie roles and his love for racing and driving fast cars. Patrick Dempsey has a lot of similar characteristics, such as being a popular movie actor and racing fast cars. While I would say that McQueen’s roles partly led him to be thought more of as a iconic car guy (after all Bullitt and Le Mans really positioned him as that) it was his off the screen racing and driving fast cars that cemented this.
Patrick Dempsey has the behind the scenes part down (he is know to enjoy driving great sports cars, such as Porsche and his racing is well publicized), but some of his movie rolls make him appear to more of a heartthrob. If Dempsey was to break out and play some cooler roles (especially roles that involve a good driving chase scene) then he would cement himself as the next iconic car guy.
So, is Patrick Dempsey the New King of Cool? I think so, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
