The headlines are currently full of rumors and details about the 700+ horsepower 2020 Shelby GT500. The newest incarnation of high performance Mustang promises to be as poised on the track as on the drag strip.

The Shelby Mustang GT500 has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Before making a high performance version of the ‘Stang, Carroll Shelby said that the Ford Mustang was a very good secretary’s car. He certainly did a good job of changing that perception.

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 has been unveiled and the American performance machine takes the GT350 concept to the next level. Powering the GT500 is a supercharged 5.2-liter hand built V8. Official performance figures have not yet fully been released, but we do know that the ‘Stang will have over 700 horsepower on tap.

All of this works together with the aerodynamic shape and large rear wing to offer great track performance. As this is a muscle car 1/4 mile times and 0-60 mph times are huge.

Just How Much Faster Are Cars Now Than In The Mid-80’s

Automotive technology has come a long way. Much of what we see in cars today started with exotic cars from the mid-80’s. From early two-turbocharger setups, all-wheel drive setups and ride adjustment, these are all things that are common in cars today, but back about 30 years ago these were new concepts. Some of them came from a necessity to meet stricter fuel consumption and emission laws.

Today it is normal to see cars pumping out well over 300 horsepower without thinking much of it. Back in the mid-80’s when the Porsche 959 was introduced it made 444 horsepower, which was considered enormous power at the time. That figure is now bested by a Ford Mustang GT.
