Robot Race Car

Robocar

If this press information had been released tomorrow I would say for sure it is an April Fool’s joke. But today is March 31st and the folks over at Robocar have announced their new project which is a robotic race car.

While at first I laughed at the idea of a driverless race car, I think it may actually make sense. Now from a motorsports fan stand point the beauty of the sport is the teaming up of man and machine, but there is another element at stake in racing.

Earlier this week we reported that a new Formula E Donington Park lap record was set. The previous record was a time of 1:30.250 set by Daniel Abt. Records in the all-electric racing series don’t last very long as that time beat a record set just the previous week.

Records were made to be broken must be the Formula E motto as the lap record was once again bested. Lucas di Grassi managed to get the time of just 1:29.920.

Formula E Lap Record Crushed At Donington Park

Formula E Lap Record set by Daniel Abt

Formula E has been called the quietest racing series ever. These all-electric competition machines may use the same design principal as a car like the Nissan Leaf but they are very different animals.

The young series has some very good drivers and is important to what very well may end up being the future of the automobile. Thanks to government regulations and a need for alternate fuels, it looks like most automakers see all-electric vehicles as the future of transportation. Racing development often is the best testing ground for new technologies that will eventually find their way into road cars. Formula E paves the way for this development.

Tanner Foust

Tanner Foust

Global Rallycross and U.S. Top Gear Co-Host, Tanner Foust knows his way around a high performance car. He also likes to get sideways whenever he can.

But all of that fun driving leaves quite a carbon footprint. In a world where many think that the emissions from cars is causing a lot of environmental damage, having this much fun in cars is not politically correct. But, what does Mr. Foust think about all of this?

Click past the jump (or scroll down if you came directly to the full article) to see Tanner Foust’s comment on his carbon footprint.

First Formula E Race Quietly Makes History

By   September 17, 2014

Formula E

Formula E

Formula E is surely the quietest form of Motorsport. The series features open-wheeled all-electric vehicles that can hit speeds up to 150 mph. Competitors need to make sure to keep a sharp eye out as you will never hear a car coming up to pass you.

The first race was this past weekend and did it ever have an exciting ending. The two leading cars bumped into one another putting both out of commission and causing Nicolas Prost to get airborne and land upside down. God was watching out for Mr. Prost and he was able to walk away from the horrific looking accident.

The incident allowed for Brazilian Di Grassi to waltz in for the win. The Beijing Evergrande Spring ePrix was a success with 75,000 people attending and an estimated 40 million people watching on TV or over the internet.

It will be interesting to see if people continue to follow the series or if it is just because it is new. Many may have watched just to see how long an all-electric race car could drive at high speed and to see how long a refilling pit stop would take (not long because they just get into another car).

Did you watch the race or not? Let us know what you think of Formula E in the comments.
