5 Best Production Sports Cars Of All Time

Our List of the 5 Best Production Sports Cars of all Time

There have been some great sports cars made over the years. From modern supercars like the Bugatti Veyron to classics like the Lamborghini Miura there are a lot of great cars to choose from. Some are just incredible straight line performers, while others are more about handling and some can do both well.

We’ve put together what we think are the top 5 sports cars of all time. Checkout the list and see if you agree with us or not.

  • Ferrari 250 GTO
    Ferrari 250 GTO
The beautiful design and great performance of the 250 GTO make it one of the all time greats. Only 39 examples were sold in order for homologation of the car for racing in the FIA’s Group 3 Grand Touring Car class. These cars are extremely valuable with one going for $35 million dollars in 2012 and they are owned by the likes of Ralph Lauren. When you think of great Ferraris the 250 GTO is pretty much in a class by itself.
  • McLaren F1
    McLaren F1
The F1 was the first production road car by McLaren and it was a doozy. For a while it was the fastest car in the world with it being able to hit a top speed of 243 mph. Unlike the modern Bugatti Veyron that accomplishes its high speed using many technological tricks and a huge engine, the F1 was all about high horsepower, lightweight materials and great suspension. Oh and it seats three with the driver in the middle, which is about as cool as it gets.
  • Porsche 911
    Porsche 911 RS
Is there a more iconic sports car than the Porsche 911? The rear-engined car is designed backwards and yet is able to do things that other sports cars only dream of. The car is the pinnacle of engineering taking a platform that performed well, but with finicky the handling, and evolving it into a complete package. Beyond all this there aren’t many sports car models that can say they have been in existence for 50 years.
  • Mercedes 300SL Gullwing
    Mercedes 300SL Gullwing
The 300SL Gullwing is one of the most recognizable cars in the world. In many ways it can be thought of as the father of supercars. When it was introduced it was the fastest car in the world and could only be enjoyed by the wealthy. When you think of the fact that a car from the ’50s was capable of hitting 160 mph (depending on gearing) that puts it in supercar status right there. Of course the brakes would make that a very scary speed to be driving. Of course it is the “Gullwing” doors that really make it the iconic car that it is.
  • Chevrolet Corvette
    Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
The Corvette is the American sports car. There have been other sports cars from the United States, but none has been as successful as the Corvette. The model has been with us from 60 years. It started with a lightweight stylish sports car with an inline-6 engine, but it was when a V8 was put into the car that it started to become a legend. While some of the models have had their quirks the car has really grown up and the 2014 Stingray looks like it will be an incredible sports car.

So those are our top 5 sports cars, did your favorite make the list? No matter if you agree with us or not, we want to hear your thoughts in the comments below. McLaren Ready For Total 24 Hours Of Spa

By   July 5, 2013

McLaren Ready for Total 24 Hours of Spa

When the Total 24 Hours of Spa is run later this months ten McLaren 12C GT3s will be driving in the race. One of the racers will be Chris Goodwin, McLaren’s chief test driver. He will be racing with the Von Ryan Racing team and will join drivers Rob Barff and ex-Formula One driver Bruno Senna. To make things a bit tougher at this year’s race the team will move into the GT Pro class.

Last year the team managed a very good fourth place finish in the 24 hour endurance race. However, this hard fought finish was in the Pro-Am class, so moving up to the higher class will give them a much harder test. None the less they believe that they have the car and drivers to move up to a podium finish.

You never know what may happen in an endurance races, but we will know how they finish later this month.

Press Release

The 2013 Total 24 Hours of Spa will see a grid of at least 10 examples of the McLaren 12C GT3 later this month, with McLaren GT customer team Von Ryan Racing returning for a second consecutive year, moving into the Pro category for the first time. The driver line-up will see McLaren Automotive chief test driver Chris Goodwin return to the team, having contested the headline event of the Blancpain Endurance Series last year, and he joins team regular and former teammate Rob Barff and ex-Formula 1™ driver Bruno Senna.

Goodwin returns to the cockpit of the striking #88 McLaren for the Total 24 Hours of Spa, in which he and Rob Barff claimed a hard-fought fourth place in the Pro-Am category on the first attempt, less than 30 seconds off a podium finish after a gruelling 24 hours. For this year’s assault, the team is again led by former McLaren Formula 1 team manager Dave Ryan, with the support of Leon Price and Dragon Racing, and sees Goodwin and Barff reunited and joined for this one-off round of the Blancpain Endurance Series by Bruno Senna as part of his continued GT drive programme for 2013.

The driver line-up is particularly special for Chris Goodwin, who has managed Bruno Senna’s career, starting in junior racing and through seasons in Formula 1™. Commenting on the line up for the Total 24 Hours of Spa, Goodwin explained: ‘It is a fantastic opportunity to tackle my favourite race again with Von Ryan Racing, and it’s great to be back in the car sharing with Rob Barff. He has been racing with the team throughout the season, and has been one of the quickest and most consistent drivers on the grid. Of course, I’m really looking forward to racing with Bruno as well. We have worked together for many years now, but we have never actually driven together before so this will be a new experience for both of us. I’ve watched him race at Spa many times in GP2, Formula 1™ and in GT cars, and know how quick he can be. It should be a fun weekend!’

Commenting on joining the team, Bruno Senna explained: ‘I have really enjoyed the experience of racing in GTs so far this season, but this will be my first race in a McLaren. Obviously it is a brand that my family has close links with, and I am really honoured to have the chance to have the opportunity to race the 12C GT3 in the 50th year of the team. I am really looking forward to racing with Chris as well. We have worked together for a number of years, and it will be a lot of fun to race alongside him, and with the Von Ryan Racing team we hope to be able to get a strong result after 24 Hours at one of my favourite race circuits.’

Rob Barff, who has contested the opening three rounds of the Blancpain Endurance Series with Von Ryan Racing this season, explained: ‘The Total 24 Hours of Spa is a truly incredible event. It is the ultimate test of a car and a team in terms of durability and endurance, and we are using it as a way of showcasing the trackday operation in the Middle East run by Dragon Racing. I am very much looking forward to teaming back up with Chris after our strong result last year, and the addition of Bruno as our third driver puts us in a really strong position. An all Pro driver line-up is something new for the team, and the opposition is truly world class, but I am optimistic we can mount a credible challenge.’

The Total 24 Hours of Spa gets underway at 16.30 (CEST) on Saturday, 27 July and will see more than 60 cars line up on the grid.

The 900+ horsepower hybrid monster that is the Ferrari LaFerrari made its Japanese debut yesterday. The car is the successor to the last supercar from the Italian sports car maker, the Enzo. The styling stands out and it will definitely get anybody that has enough money to buy one (and it won’t be cheap) plenty of looks on the road. The limited edition Ferrari has been well received all around the world and Japan was no different.

This is the year of the hybrid supercar with Porsche and McLaren also coming out with hybrids that can put up well over 800 horsepower. These are the cars that will make you actually want to own a hybrid. These supercars will help keep performance alive as Government regulation helps dictate the future of performance cars.

Press Release

The “LaFerrari”, the first hybrid supercar built at Maranello appeared for the first time in Japan last night. The latest member of the limited special edition series produced by the Prancing Horse was shown to a group of selected owners and enthusiasts of the Marque in an exclusive setting in the centre of Tokyo.

“Japan’s passion for supercars goes back a long time and we are happy to be able to give our most loyal customers the most powerful car ever built by Ferrari,” said Herbert Appleroth, the President and CEO of Ferrari Japan.

Guests at the event were able to enjoy a special exhibition called “Supercar Chronicle,” which brought together all the previous supercars from the Prancing Horse’s illustrious past – the 288 GTO, the F40, the F50 and the Enzo. After that came the unveiling of the “LaFerrari” in an refined and elegant ceremony, which matched the exclusivity of a car of which only 499 examples will be built.

McLaren Launches Designed By Air Website For The P1

McLaren P1 Designed by Air

McLaren P1: Designed by Air

McLaren is touting how the new P1 is so aerodynamic that it has been designed by air. The new hybrid hypercar will offer over 900 horsepower when the gas powered engine is combined with the cars electronic motor. The car is the spiritual successor to the famed McLaren F1 and aims to bring world class performance back to McLaren (not that the Mp4-12C has been a slouch).

The new McLaren P1 will be competing against new hybrid supercars from Ferrari (with the LaFerrari) and Porsche (with the 918 Spyder). All three cars look amazing and should be great performers. While it is yet to be seen if any of them will get close to touching the Bugatti Veyron’s top speed performance, they are guaranteed to be the fastest production hybrids that you will be able to buy over the next few years.

To show just how advanced the aerodynamics are in the P1, McLaren has launched a website to show off the car. The site is well done and has a lot of great information about the new hypercar. The site has good video presentations and is interactive to show how all that air flow comes together to make the car so fast.

You can check out the web experience at designedbyair.com.

Press Release

The key to the performance for the McLaren P1™ is aerodynamics, and a new web experience, entitled ‘Designed by Air’, is the first of a two part series telling the extraordinary story behind the car’s design.

The website offers participants a detailed insight as the car is ‘born’ from raw metallic and carbon elements and is crafted by airflow. The journey evolves to unveil the McLaren P1™ within the wind tunnel highlighting the aerodynamic focus of the design.

Expanding into further sections, the story behind the design of the McLaren P1™ reveals an interactive 3D model with further information about the finely honed aerodynamic features. The immersive experience, inspired by McLaren Automotive Design Director Frank Stephenson’s biomimicry design philosophy, showcases the McLaren P1™ in simulated urban, alpine, highway and track environments, detailing how the active aerodynamic systems adjust and adapt to deliver optimum performance for differing driving conditions.

The ‘Designed by Air’ McLaren P1™ experience is socially enabled, with a final section ‘Future Chapters’ inviting users to ‘like’, share and register ahead of future updates on the car’s interior and performance features.

Frank Stephenson, Design Director at McLaren Automotive explains: “Our main objective with the McLaren P1™ was to design the best driver’s car in the world, on road and track. Managing air flow in and around the car’s bodywork and optimising aerodynamics was key in achieving this goal. This design philosophy crafted the highly unique and emotive shape of the car.

“The online ‘Designed by Air’ experience developed for the McLaren P1™ captures the essence and detail of the car’s aerodynamic design in an immersive and engaging way.”

The McLaren P1TM experience can be found at designedbyair.com.
