Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix of Atlanta Race Highlights – Video

This weekend was the running of the Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix of Atlanta at the legendary Road Atlanta racing circuit in the Rolex Sports Car Series. The race had a lot of great action in all three classes and kept spectators entertained.

In the DP class the Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW/Riley took the win followed by the Starworks with Alex Popow Ford/Riley and then the GAINSCO/ Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP.

In the GT class Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R took the win followed by the Park Place Motorsports Porsche GT3 and then the Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458. Ferrari was in good position to win for much of the race, but didn’t have enough steam to get it done in the end.

Porsche did well in the class with three cars finishing in the top 5. Sadly, this was the last race for the legendary Brumos Racing Porsche in the foreseeable future. They managed a 4th place finish and Leh Keen and Andrew Davis will be racing next year, but not with Brumos. The Magnus Racing Porsche came into the race in the points lead and they finished in fifth place which caused them to fall to send place, but just one point behind the new leader.

In the GX class Mazda got their first win of the season with the Visit Florida Racing/Speedsource Mazda6 GX was able to beat out the BGB Motorsports Porsche Cayman for the win.

This is the last season of the Rolex Sports Car Series as we know it and it is shaping up to be a very entertaining season.

Magnus Racing Leads Porsche Customer Teams in Austin Grand-Am Event

The inaugural GRAND-AM of the Americas promised Texas-sized excitement as the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series came to the new Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin on March 2. Fans at the 3.4-mile, 20-turn road course were not disappointed during the two-hour and 45-minute second round of the 2013 season. Porsche customer teams performed very well at the track with Magnus Racing finishing second in GT class followed by Brumos Racing in third. Texas’ own Park Place Motorsports was awarded fourth with its No. 73 and sixth with its No. 72. The No. 18 of Mülhner Motorsports gave Porsche its fifth car in the top-10 with a ninth-place result.

The No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of Andy Lally (Dacula, Ga.) and John Potter (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished second after leading late in the going. The second-place result moves the team and its drivers into the GT class point lead. The team won the 2012 North American Endurance Championship.

“The guys put together a really fast Porsche today,” said Lally after the podium celebration. “We weren’t sure how today was going to go. So to be leading with just a few laps left, get knocked off the road twice and still take second shows just how good our car was. Heading to the Porsche 250 in Birmingham as the GT point leaders is still a major positive, we’ll be ready.”

The traditional colors of Brumos Racing’s No. 59 carried Andrew Davis (Athens, Ga.) and Leh Keen (Charleston, S.C.) to their first podium of the year. While the 2011 GRAND-AM GT champions never led the race, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based operation was near the front most of the day after starting the race third.

Park Place Motorsports brought three entries from its Dallas headquarters to Austin and all three cars impressed. Leading the way was the No. 73 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of Patrick Lindsey (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Porsche factory driver Patrick Long (Belleair, Fla.). The car had the most adversity of the Porsches today having both led laps and running near the back of the field. Lindsey was penalized for avoidable contact during his stint dropping the car in the pack. Long fought back to the lead and finished fourth. The freshman team’s highest result thus far.

“We were 12th on my last restart with about 25 minutes to go,” reflected Long. “I knew I had a ‘racecar’ but I also knew that track position was going to be difficult because this track doesn’t make it easy to get around guys. A lot of cars got together and we were able to avoid all the melees and make a couple of passes. This was this team’s first top-five. We’re excited because this is our home race and to have two cars in the top-10 is exciting. We have a lot more potential to crack open and that has me really passionate and excited because I think what motorsports is all about is to grow with an organization like this. There’s a certain motivation when you go to the Porsche Platz in the morning and there are 350 people there cheering for you. It’s a great opportunity to fly the flag and get the word out about what Park Place Motorsports is all about. So it’s very satisfying to put all those Porsches up there at the front here today.”

Having led the race and eventually taking sixth at the checkered flag, the No. 72 Park Place Motorsports entry of Mike Skeen (Durham, N.C.) and Mike Vess was one of the great surprises of the day.

Skeen offered: “That was definitely a tough race. Not a usual one where it’s a battle all the way through. We got down a lap early on but we got it right back on a pit stop. It was a great call to leave us out for strategy. And then I was told we could make the fuel number if I conserve, so I was short-shifting everywhere, coasting on the brakes trying to save fuel. I don’t know what was harder, that or the run to the end for the checkered flag. That was a lot of fun, and of course we had to battle it out to the end on old tires. Held strong for a decent finish and I’m very glad to be here with Park Place and Vess Energy.”

The No. 18 Mülhner Motorsports America machine earned a ninth-place result with Canadian Kyle Marcelli and Dion von Moltke (Choral Gables, Fla.). The third Park Place Porsche, the No. 71 of John McCutchen (Dallas), Jason Hart (Flower Mound, Texas) and Chuck Cole, finished just outside the top-10 in 12th. The No. 19 Mülhner Motorsports America entry ended the day in 15th with the Chilean driver pairing of Eliseo Salazar and Eduardo Costabal.

The race did not end without controversy. The No. 63 Ferrari, awarded the victory on the timesheets, was ordered to serve a stop-and-go penalty plus an additional stay in pit lane of 60 seconds. The team did not serve the penalty prior to the checkered flag. As a result, GRAND-AM officials penalized the team one lap and 90 seconds in the final results. As a result, the Porsche teams up to but not including the No. 71 entry moved-up one spot. The No. 94 Turner Motorsports BMW was awarded the class win.

“My compliments to all of our Porsche customer teams,” said Jens Walther, president and CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America. “This is a new track to everyone and it is good to see all the cars competing on the same ground where no one comes with an advantage of experience. It is an amazing facility, very difficult, very technical. It was a tough race and it is good to see that race control is holding a high-level of expectation for driving etiquette. It is gratifying but not surprising to see how well our teams adapted themselves to this new challenge.”

The No. 38 BGB Motorsport Porsche Cayman driven by Rolex 24 At Daytona winner Jim Norman (Tampa, Fla.), Jeff Mosing (Austin) and Spencer Pumpelly (Atlanta) won both the pole position and the race in the GX class.

Ryan Dalziel Takes Stunning Second In Texas

2012 Speed.com Sports Car driver of the year Ryan Dalziel produced a driving masterclass to help Starworks Motorsport to second place at the Grand-Am Of The Americas in Austin, Texas.

The proud Scot – who now lives in Windermere, Florida – needed all his battling qualities to fight his way up the field in the #2 Ford Riley. He had an excellent crowd on its feet as he started the last lap in third place, but finished just four tenths of a second down in second place.

But that only tells part of the story. Starworks team-mate Alex Popow, from Venezuela, had qualified the car in seventh place. He had climbed two places before he was sent spinning at Turn 15. That dropped him to 11thwhen he handed over to Ryan with just over two hours to go.

Ryan, originally from Airdrie in Lanarkshire, Scotland, soon had the #2 car up to 10th and, within 25 laps, was up to second for the Fort Lauderdale-based team.

A yellow flag caution put him down the field again, but he was in third place going into the final lap. He passed Scott Pruett’s Chip Ganassi BMW, then hunted down Alex Gurney and the two crossed the line almost together.

RYAN SAYS: “We will have to invent a new word for ‘charge’. I don’t think I have ever driven so hard in the last four laps of a race. The car was excellent and we came into the race full of confidence. We got involved in that incident at the start, but we got back on track.

“The car was damaged after the hit but it tells you how fast we could have been – to be that good with a damaged car. Alex and the whole Starworks crew did a great job and we are really proud of this result.

Blocked image“That last yellow didn’t help us. I think, if it hadn’t been for that we could have won it.

“It was an amazing race – I hope that everyone enjoyed it! It was hard. We knew where our strengths and weaknesses were going to be heading into the weekend and went down our own path in terms of strategy.

“We struggled a bit with straight line speed and with one more lap maybe we could have got the win. But we go away with good points and have risen up to third in the Series. Overall, it’s a great result for the #2 car, Team Popow and everyone at Starworks.”

A Great Day For Corvette, Ford, BMW And Porsche At The Circuit Of The Americas

This past weekend was the inaugural running of the Grand-Am of the Americas at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The race saw a lot of great action with a lot of contact happening during the race. Much of the contact was in the DP class where a lot of cars swapped paint causing a few crashes.

In the DP class the #99 GAINSCO/ Bob Stallings Racing Corvette managed to get the win followed by the #2 Starworks Motorsport Ford/Riley and rounding off the top three was the #01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW/Riley. The final lap in the DP class was a good one with the number #01 BMW/Riley starting the lap in second place, but a good pass by the #2 Ford/Riley car was able to get second place. For Corvette is was a great day in the DP class with Corvettes finishing 1st, 4th and 5th.

In the very competitive GT class the #94 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 was able to get the win away from a trio of Porsches. Coming in second place was the #44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3 followed by the #59 Brumos Racing Porsche 911 GT3. Porsche had a very good day in the GT class with the top three Porsches finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th. In the class 5 Porsches finished in the top 10. The #69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458 that led for a good portion of the race finished in 5th place.

In the GX Class it was a great day for Porsche with the #38 BGB Motorsports Porsche Cayman won the class over a pair of Mazda6 GX cars.The small GX class proved that Porsche is still faster than Mazda, at least for the time being. Having said this the Mazdas are getting much more competitive in the class.

The video shows a lot of the action that happened in the race and gives you a good sense at just how hard the drivers fought for first place. The next race in the Rolex Sports Car Series is the Porsche 250 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama on April 7th.
