Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show

Summer is almost officially upon us and that means cars shows. Sure, there are plenty of Cars and Coffee events that you can see great cars, but the competition car shows are now well underway.

For us the car show season starts with the Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show. Of course if we were on the east coast Amelia Island is the show that starts things off, but that is all the way on the other side of the country. We thought that when we drove the Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R that we had experienced quite a crazy machine, but the “Ole Yeller” may prove us wrong. The very track ready and yet road legal car is inspired by the North American P-51D Mustang airplane. It gets its “Ole Yeller” name from the plane piloted by Bob Hoover, renowned United States Air Force fighter pilot and air show performer, for over 20 years.

Under the hood you get the same 526 horsepower flat-plane crank naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V8 found in the GT350 and GT350R. The high revving engine is like a rocket, especially as the revs build. Mechanically setting “Ole Yeller” apart from the standard GT350 or harder core GT350R is a TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission and a specially tuned sport suspension. Those two changes are what make this the most track ready, street legal Mustang ever built by Ford.

When we had our opportunity to drive the Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R at Laguna Seca it blew us away. It was powerful, but managed to handle very well thanks in part to its suspension setup. But most of all it was a track beast.

Comparing it to the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is an apples to oranges comparison. The Hellcat may offer 707 horsepower, but it can also easily be dialed back for an enjoyable long ride. The GT350R is ready for the track at all times and as such provides an uncompromising ride no matter where you drive it.

We are now a few days into 2016 and we hope it is going well for you thus far. For us 2015 was a very good year and it was a great overall year for the automobile.
