Why Is The Porsche 928 Not Considered A Supercar?

Porsche 928

Many think that Porsche has produced three supercars. Normally the 959, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder are considered the company’s ultra high performance machines. Some would add the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, the 904 and the 550 Spyder to the list but the other three are the consensus picks. However, there is one car that filled the brand’s top model space, but isn’t normally mentioned in the supercar conversation.

The Porsche 928 is often thought of as possibly the best GT car ever made, but is it more than that. Should the V8 powered cruiser also be considered a supercar?

McLaren 540C

The McLaren 540C will make its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show. The “entry level” sports car from the British performance car maker will sit just below the 570S in the model lineup.

The car’s performance and price put it in position to compete with the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Even though this is a less expensive car, the price point is still high enough that the marquee should not loose its exclusivity.

Is This The Mercedes-Benz AMG Hybrid Supercar?

By   February 25, 2015

Mercedes AMG Hybrid Supercar

Mercedes AMG Hybrid Supercar

Rumors that Mecedes-Benz is working on a hybrid supercar to compete with the likes of the Porsche 918 Spyder have been confirmed. The rumors are all over the place about the specifications, but the car will not likely be seen until at least 2018 and possibly as late as 2020.

Performance speculations are that the car will use a twin-turbocharged AMG V8 that when combined with the electronic motors could produce close to 1,000 horsepower. The 0-60 mph time should be in the mid-2 second range and a top speed of over 200 mph is expected. As for price, if you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

The car sounds like it will be a beast. However, is Mercedes AMG hitting a moving target? The 918 Spyder already produces 887 horsepower and the Ferrari LaFerrari produces 950 horsepower, so if Mercedes shoots to compete with these cars, isn’t it likely that they will have moved on to even more powerful and faster machines?

A new hybrid supercar with an AMG badge would be exciting to see, but the German luxury car maker needs to keep an eye on the future. They need to make sure that they are shooting high enough that when it comes out it hasn’t already been left in the dust.
